Math Reflection
This year we did a lot of interesting things in Math. We used a program called Connected Math 2. Connected Math 2 is an investigative approach to learning mathematics. It helps students in grades 6-8.
We have done 6 out of 8 books in the program. We have done Prime Time, Bits and Pieces 1, Shapes and Designs, Bits and Pieces 2, Covering and Surrounding, and how likely is it? The way Connected Math 2 works is in the books there are things called investigations. Investigations are like chapters. At the end of each investigation, there is something called Reflections. The reflections we had in math either had 3 or 4 questions that you have to answer. In each investigation, they have work or A.C.E. This stands for Applications, Connections, and Extensions. Usually we would get A.C.E. for homework. The next day we would check our homework.
Now you’re probably wondering where we keep all of this A.C.E. We keep in our math notebook. In our math notebook, we have tabs so it’s easier to find things. Our tabs are class work, where we keep our class work. Our next tab is homework, which helps me find my homework faster. Next tab is assessment, that’s where we keep our graded papers (quizzes, tests, reflections, etc.) The next tab is reference. This will keep things you need for tests or quizzes. Then we have our vocabulary notebook. Whenever there is a highlighted word in our book, we write the definition in our vocabulary book. We cut tabs and put the letters in alphabetical order. That was we can get those definitions down faster.
My favorite book we did was shapes and designs. I liked this book because it was interesting to learn about polygons that had 12 sides and 10 sides and try to pronounce their names. I also liked this book because we did a really fun project. What we did is everybody got cameras. We were divided into groups and went around the school and took pictures of any polygons or shapes we could find. After that we uploaded the pictures onto the computer and we put it into a photo story. We recorded our voices and presented them. IT was fun for me because I like taking pictures of things that are everywhere. Another fun thing we did was learned how to use and angle ruler. When I was little and I was seeing the bigger kids using them, I was so confused. There were so many numbers and lines. Now that I know how to use them, it’s fun to use, (and easy).

I had a really fun math year. I enjoyed it because I learned A LOT. I have always liked math. It was always y favorite subject. If I had any advice for fifth graders is, have fun in math. Things may be hard in the beginning, but you get use to it. Some of the things may be difficult to understand, but always ask questions. I hope you will have as much fun in math next year as I did this year.
